INTERCONNECTING CARBON VALUE CHAINS BY ADVANCED POLYOLEFIN RECYCLING: THE FUTURE IS NEARLY HERE

SPEAKER 1: Pieter Billen

Short Bio:

Pieter Billen is an associate professor at the University of Antwerp, Belgium, where he leads the iPRACS research group. He has been working on sustainable waste management for over a decade, and recently started a quest for improved definitions of recyclability and the establishment of novel polymer value chains. The research group combines advanced knowledge of organic synthesis, catalysis, and process design, in projects related to molecular (monomer) management in the future circular value chains for polyurethanes, polyolefins, and rubbers.

Pieter Billen obtained his doctorate in chemical engineering at KU Leuven (Belgium) in 2015 and has postdoctoral experience from Drexel University (PA, USA) and KU Leuven. He joined UAntwerp in 2017, and is currently (co)supervising 10 doctoral students and 4 postdocs.

FROM WASTE TO RESOURCE: TURNING WASTE AND BIOMASS VALORIZATION INTO VALUE-ADDED BIOPRODUCTS

SPEAKER 2: Laura Mejias

Short Bio: Short Bio: Laura Mejias is a Senior Researcher in the Environmental Technologies & Circular Bioeconomy area at BETA Technological Center (University of Vic – Central University of Catalonia). She is actively working on several projects, at both national and international levels, focused on organic solid waste stream valorization, turning them into high-value bioproducts. In all her professional activities, Dr. Mejias considers it essential to orient her scientific work with the interests and challenges of the industrial sectors and society in order to increase the real impact of scientific results and innovation. In this sense, Dr. Mejias regularly participates in various forums with companies and public administrations in order to know what these challenges are and at the same time to detect and generate new opportunities.
