Join this incredibly exciting webinar with Dr. Phil Howel (Research Lead, Crop Genetic Resources | NIAB / Bezos Centre for Sustainable Protein) who will be speaking on the topic:
From pre-breeding in cereals to the Bezos Centre for Sustainable Protein: how crop genetic diversity can power sustainable food systems to improve consumer and planetary health
Modern crop production must meet the challenges of growing sufficient nutritious food using fewer inputs, in the face of a changing climate and growing population, whilst minimising negative impacts on biodiversity and the environment.
Niab has been at the forefront of ‘pre-breeding’, exploring the rich genetic diversity that falls outside the range of elite cultivars, and bringing this into the hands of commercial breeders to ultimately deliver future crop varieties which are more nutritious, more resilient and less reliant on intensive farming practices. This talk will highlight lessons learned through pre-breeding in wheat, and how these are now being applied to help accelerate progress in other crops such as legumes. These will underpin the emerging plant-based protein sector, including exciting initiatives such as the new Bezos Centre for Sustainable Protein.
