In Denmark, cardiovascular disease (CVD) causes 25% of all deaths), and half a million people are living with CVD. Remarkably, 80% of cardiac events and strokes are preventable; half through early detection and intervention. However, current risk screening tools as SCORE2, simply based upon age, sex, blood pressure and cholesterol level and only for people below 70 years are too imprecise.

We will develop AI based precision tools for estimation of personal risk and preventive potential of cardiometabolic disease (CMD), none-genetic Alzheimer´s Disease, and osteoporosis using unique data, not available anywhere else in the world: In our DANCAVAS trial, 15,000 random 60-74 year old men attended comprehensive CVD screening and were examined for coronary artery calcification (CAC) and aortic aneurysms by CT scanning, had four-limb blood pressure measurements to detect peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and hypertension, and blood tests to detect diabetes mellitus and hypercholesterolemia. In case of positive finding(s), preventive actions were initiated.

The team currently includes clinicians specialized in CVD, imaging, and biochemistry, and scientists specialized in proteomics and biochemistry, AI, (pharmaco)epidemiology & health economics.

The team is looking for additional resources for the project including:

  • Other specific biomarkers of interest
  • Epigenetics incl. AHRR methylation
  • Plasma-transcriptomics
  • Metabolomics
  • Cell free DNA subclassified as +/- human, and +/- mitochondrial derived
  • Downstream biomarkers of the Toll receptors  & STING pathways
  • Plasma microbiome
  • Genotyping of the validation cohort (7500)

ABOUT ODIN

We unite right minds from industry and academia so that they can jointly create need-driven research projects - and pave the way for innovative new treatments in the future. Through competitive funding calls, we fund the best projects ideas. Although companies cannot receive funding, it is free of charge to join.

The 5-year platform is sponsored by the Novo Nordisk Foundation with 180 M DKK from 2024-2028.
