Quantum Futures in the Making: workshop on sociotechnical imaginaries in quantum tech
Assoc. Prof. Kristian Hvidtfelt Nielsen leads a new AUFF NOVA–funded project on "Quantum Futures in the Making". The project explores how sociotechnical imaginaries shape quantum technologies and their governance—and hosts the workshop “Building Quantum Futures” at Aarhus University, 8–9 June 2026. Abstract deadline: 15 April 2026.
Quantum technologies are often framed through powerful visions of what they will make possible—scientifically, economically, politically and socially. A new research project, Quantum Futures in the Making: Sociotechnical Imaginaries and Public Engagement, examines how such “quantum imaginaries” emerge and compete across arenas such as research, industry, policy, security and the public sphere, and how they influence innovation pathways and governance choices.
As part of the project, an interdisciplinary workshop—“Building Quantum Futures: Sociotechnical Visions and Their Implications”—will take place at Aarhus University on 8–9 June 2026. The workshop brings together scholars working on historical and contemporary framings of quantum science and technology, as well as their ethical, political and societal implications.
