Learn about FutureLakes

The overarching objective of FutureLakes is to demonstrate innovative solutions needed to transform European lake restoration.

FutureLakes aims to revolutionize transform lake restoration by piloting demonstrating innovative nature-based and circular blue economy solutions, while reducing pollution, restoring biodiversity and stimulating the blue economy around lakes biodiversity-focused approaches.

The project will demonstrate integration of these technical and managerial solutions into lake basin management in six large European lakes, creating a tested blueprint for lake protection and restoration.

This blueprint will include a catalogue of innovations and guidance on how to attract green financing for implementing restoration measures and innovations in policy that support the restoration process to mainstream these approaches in lake management planning.

FutureLakes will also demonstrate pilot more effective and inclusive approaches to collaboration in water governance management. This will focus policy implementation, and green financing especially on important economic sectors and public engagement to help co-create visions for their lake in the future, and subsequent actions they can take to achieve this.
Additionally, the project will develop a roadmap for scaling up lake restoration across Europe, supporting the broad aims of the Mission Restore our Ocean and Waters. This includes creating a prototype for a European Lakes Digital Innovation Hub and enhancing public engagement in lake restoration efforts.

FutureLakes is a project contributing to the European Union’s “Mission Restore our Ocean & Waters” and is funded under the call, HORIZON-MISS-2023-OCEAN-01-04.
