Közép-Magyarország or Central Hungary is one of seven regions in Hungary. It includes Budapest (the capital of the region) and Pest County. The sub-region contains a population of 1,712,210.
The study area is located in the Pannonian biographical region. The physical properties of the soil are: loam (34%) sandy (33%), sandy clay (16%) and clay loam (9%). The total size of the study area is 691,546 ha of which 397,700 is utilised agricultural area.

The average farm size in Central Hungary is 5 ha, which is smaller than the European Union average of 15 ha. The majority of the holdings are less than 5 ha (94%) with only 1% of holdings over 50 ha. 77% of the agricultural area is arable land and the dominant farming systems are cereals with small to large dairy and small mixed farming (dairy, poultry and pigs.). Around 36% of the farmed land is owner occupied compared to an EU average of about 70%.
