PIG-PARADIGM October Monthly Seminar Recap

In our October Monthly Seminar, hosted by the Host Pillar, we had the pleasure of welcoming Professor Jens Peter Nielsen from the University of Copenhagen, who gave an insightful talk titled “Post-Weaning Diarrhea and Antimicrobial Threats.”

💡 Key highlights:

  • Provided an overview of the current situation in Denmark regarding post-weaning diarrhea and antimicrobial use.
  • Compared batch and individual treatment strategies and their effects on antibiotic consumption and resistance.
  • Shared findings from a PIG-PARADIGM cohort study of 2,500 pigs, showing that precise individual treatments can reduce unnecessary antibiotic use without compromising welfare.
  • Highlighted growing antimicrobial resistance—particularly to neomycin and apramycin—and its implications for both animal and human health.
  • Presented new insights on host genetics associated with E. coli susceptibility and future prevention strategies.

A big thank you to Professor Jens Peter Nielsen for an engaging and thought-provoking presentation, and to everyone who joined us for the discussion!
