April Monthly Seminar highlight

Our April Monthly Seminar, organized by the Host Pillar, featured an insightful talk by Mattia Pirolo (Assistant Professor, University of Copenhagen) titled: “Alternatives to antibiotics in pigs: Effects on growth performance and gut microbiome.”

Mattia presented their work  from the AVANT – Alternatives to Veterinary ANTimicrobials project, which is paving the way for more sustainable livestock management. His presentation highlighted innovative, field-ready alternatives to antimicrobials in pig production- particularly targeting post-weaning diarrhoea, a key driver of antibiotic use in Europe.

Mattia also shared insights into AVANT's multi-actor approach, which combines scientific validation, large-scale farm trials, and stakeholder engagement. He detailed promising strategies including synbiotic feed additives, bacteriophage therapies, and faecal microbiota transplants. These interventions aim to reduce reliance on antibiotics while supporting animal health and regulatory readiness.
