Lipidy the Friendly Ghost, Elif Köksal, NCMM

"The image is taken with a confocal microscope and is false-colored using an image processing program. It is basically a drop of lipid/oil in an aqueous buffer. For my research, I make lipid reservoirs to spread lipid films on high energy surfaces. Three bright spots that made the eyes and the mouth of the ghost are just lipid reservoirs that started to spread on the surface.

"I don’t have any control over where the lipid reservoir drops in the aqueous buffer are going to land on the surface. I was observing another reservoir next to this one and all of a sudden, I saw the ghost so I took a snapshot. Since it was spreading quite fast on the surface, it actually ruined the spread reservoir that I had been observing the previous minute."
