Root Towers
Twelve root towers are planned to study deep rooting in detail. The first 6 root towers have been established.
The towers are 4 m high and divided into two growth chambers each containing approx. 1.5 m3 soil.
The front of the towers consists of 20 small windows allowing for visual access to the roots as well as the possibility to insert sensors, collect samples or inject tracers.
The Red beet/Lucerne intercropping experiment is replicated in 3 chambers, while the remaining chambers are used for initial screening of different deep rooted species.
