ARIMNET: Coordination of Agricultural Research in the Mediterranean

The countries of the Mediterranean basin face a number of similar problems in relation to agriculture, mainly as regards the use and management of natural resources, such as soil and water, crop protection and threats to the security and sustainability of agricultural production resulting from climate change. The project is expected to help coordinate national research activities and identify common research programmes among the countries of the Mediterranean area, fight fragmentation and exploit synergies.

BiodivERsA is a network of 21 research-funding agencies across 15 European countries. C-IPM (under negotiation): Integrated Pest Management (IPM) ERA-NET

The overall goal of C-IPM is to ensure a higher level of implementation of Integrated Pest Management among European farmers by creating synergies from national investments in research and extension, from European initiatives, and from private sector activities in the areas of Integrated Pest Management and minor uses. Preliminary work carried out in the SCAR CWG on IPM highlights the feasibility of generating added value via joint activities that range from information sharing and the creation of knowledge hubs to the development of joint transnational actions.

COFASP: Strengthening cooperation in European research on sustainable exploitation of marine resources in the seafood chains – ERANET

COFASP is an ERA-NET created to directly address actions envisaged within fisheries, aquaculture and seafood. ERA CAPS: ERA-NET for Coordinating Action in Plant Sciences

ERA-Net for Coordinating Action in Plant Sciences. This ERA-Net on molecular plant sciences follows on from ERA-PG. ERA-CAPS' principal objective is to increase coordination and unite the resources of (predominantly) European research funding agencies with those of an enlarged Europe and beyond, to enable a pooling of scientific and economic capabilities of member countries. This will engender the creation and coordination of sustainable transnational plant science research programmes to meet the global challenges of food security and sustainability.

ERA-IB 2: ERA-Net for Industrial Biotechnology

The main objective of the ERANET proposal Systems Biology Applications ERASysAPP (app = application = translational systems biology) is to promote multidimensional and complementary European systems biology (SB) projects, programmes, and research initiatives on a number of selected research topics. Apart from setting up joint transnational calls and giving impulses for industry to apply more SB approaches, ERASysAPP will focus on horizontal topics such as improved data management and sharing, training and networking with national, transnational, and EU SB initiatives as well as programmes outside the ERA.

ERASYSBIO +: The consolidation of systems biology research stimulating the widespread adoption of systems approaches in biomedicine, biotechnology, and agri-food

Systems biology integrates mathematics, chemistry, physics, informatics, engineering and other fields in biological research. It is the interdisciplinary that makes collaboration imperative. Therefore the ERASysBio+ partners firmly believe that systems biology offers the ideal vehicle to implement pan-European collaboration in order to overcome the still success limiting fragmentation within systems biology. The aim of the ERANET-Plus is to implement a large transnational call enabling transnational, collaborative research projects in systems biology research.

EUPHRESCO-II: EUROPEAN PHYTOSANITARY RESEARCH COORDINATION II

This will contribute to the strategic objective of the JPI which is to build a European Research Area in the domain of agriculture, food security and climate change as well as to the scientific objective of enhancing resilience in agricultural production systems. In turn, this will contribute to tackling the societal challenge of ensuring food security in the face of climate change.

FORESTERRA: Enhancing FOrest RESearch in the MediTERRAnean through improved coordination and integration

The use of ICT and robotics in internal farm operations and in external farm business relations is growing fast, and compatible systems are becoming increasingly critical for achieving the full potential of the technology. The present proposal is based on the on-going ERA-NET ICT-AGRI (Co-ordination of ICT and Ro-botics in Agriculture and Related Environmental Issues). Nearly all participants continue in ICT-AGRI-2 and new participants strengthen the representation of important agricultural countries. The results, experience, tools and goodwill achieved in ICT-AGRI are thus available for ICT-AGRI-2.

MARINE BIOTECH: CSA in Marine Biotechnology

Marine ecosystems provide a unique environment with an enormous potential to contribute to environmental and human health and to the sustainable supply of food, energy and biomaterials. Marine biotechnology is, and will become even more, central to delivering these benefits from the sea. In the European context, marine biotechnology can and should make an important contribution towards meeting the 'Grand Challenges' for the 21st century and the development of greener, smarter economies, central components of the Europe 2020 Strategy. A sound strategy and a concerted coordination of relevant national and regional RTDI programmes are urgently needed in Europe to allow this potential to be realised. Networking and Integration of National Programmes in the Area of Wood Material Science and Engineering in the Forest-Based Value Chains. The overall objective of WW-Net 2 was to promote the transformation of the European F-BI from a resource-intensive to a value-added knowledge-intensive, innovative and globally competitive industry based on the sustainable use of renewable raw materials.

WOODWISDOM-NET+: Innovation in the forest-based sector for increasing resource efficiency and tackling climate change with competitive customer solutions

The main approach in the WW-Net+ is the substitution of non-renewable resources (e.g. materials or fossil fuels), by renewable forest-based solutions to reduce carbon emissions and waste. WW-Net+ will base its research, development and innovation funding activities on the processes and experience developed during the preceding ERA-Nets towards streamlined and efficient processes. The preceding ERA-Nets WoodWisdom-Net (2004-08) and WoodWisdom-Net 2 (2009-12) form the transnational WoodWisdom-Net Research Programme (total funding volume of the launched 3 calls ca. 50 million euros) which provides the planned ERA-NET Plus Action with a solid foundation. Looking to the future, the WW-Net+ will continue to improve the delivery of joint activities and has ambitious goals for funding trans-national research and offering access to the resources of other countries.

The mission of the FACCE - JPI is to achieve, support and promote integration, alignment and joint implementation of national resources under a common research and innovation strategy to address the diverse challenges in agriculture, food security and climate change. It will involve aligning existing research programmes as well as creating new ones.

JPI HDHL: Joint Programming Initiative on a Healthy Diet for a Healthy Life

This Joint Programming Initiative (JPI) aims to provide a holistic approach to develop and implement a research programme to understand the interplay of factors known to directly affect diet related diseases, discover new relevant factors, mechanisms and strategies, as well as to contribute to the development of actions, policies, innovative products and diets, with the aim of drastically reducing the burden of diet-related diseases.

BIOENERGY: Pulling bioenergy research together

The goals of the network are to strengthen European efforts to realise the potential of renewable energy production from biomass, and to strengthen industrial production by enhancing research co-operation and co-ordination on a European level, through the networking of bioenergy RTD programmes of national governments.
