Summer School: Sustainable Soil Management in Viticulture
The project ReSolVe recently organized a summer school on innovative techniques for sustainable soil management in viticulture.
PhD and master students from Italy, France, Germany and Belgium attended lectures, field labs, and farm visits. The course took place in Tuscany and was organized by the Research Center for Agriculture and Environment (CREA-AA).
The lectures focused on terroir, soil spatial variability and risks of soil degradation in the vineyard. Best practices for restoring and maintaining soil biological fertility were presented.
In the field labs, the use of proximal sensors, soil profile descriptions and soil permeability tests were presented. In this picture, greenhouse gas emissions are being measured.
The students also visited some of the most important wineries in the Chianti Classico area. The field lesson at the Barone Ricasoli winery (see picture above) was dedicated to soil-landscape observation, soil spatial variability and the effects of soil diversity in vineyard.
