Fitness check for API removal technology

Based on the guideline’s recommendations, a fitness check of the WWTP will  be conducted prior to any implementation of API removal

technologies such as ozonation or activated carbon to identify possible barriers. Amongst others, barriers can be high shares of industrial wastewater (unexpected formation of potentially toxic compounds), sludge disposal routes (sludge containing PAC must be incinerated), or elevated bromide concentrations (formation of carcinogenic bromate by ozonation). High bromide levels can be found especially at WWTPs in coastal areas, e.g. due to sea water intrusion, but, as bromide is not a common monitoring parameter, hardly any WWTP operator is aware about this potential obstacle.

Currently the fitness check is performed for 80 WWTPs in the BSR.
