Underwater Excavations

Submerged archaeology

One of the key research approaches in SUBNORDICA, is to gain knowledge on human behaviour and landscape use from known submerged archaeological sites in the Baltic Sea and apply such knowledge to the deeper water settings in the North Sea.

Underwater archaeology is a corner stone in SUBNORDICA and the methodology includes diving to do underwater excavations, sampling for dendrochronolgy and sediment sampling, as well as use of advanced underwater robotics for video recordings and sea floor scanning.
