Geoff Bailey is Anniversary Professor of Archaeology Emeritus at the University of York, UK and Visiting Professor at Flinders University, Australia. He is an expert in the archaeology of coastal regions and drowned landscapes including experience of onshore and offshore investigations. He chaired the EU-funded COST network SPLASHCOS, which brought together archaeologists, marine scientists, heritage managers and industrial interests from across Europe, and provided the stimulus for many subsequent underwater research initiatives and collaborations including the SUBNORDICA ERC Synergy grant.
He has led many on-land and underwater investigations in Australia, England, Denmark, Greece, Saudi Arabia and Spain. He was principal investigator on the ERC Advanced Grant DISPERSE, which included underwater investigations in the Saudi sector of the southern Red Sea, and a co-investigator in the Deep History of Sea Country Project funded by the Australian Research Council, which involved underwater landscape mapping and archaeological discoveries in Western Australia and investigation of underwater shell middens in Denmark. Most recently he has been a Partner Investigator in the SEACHANGE ERC Synergy Project with further involvement in new research in Australia and NW Europe.
Geoff is a Partner Investigator in the SUBNORDICA project and will provide expertise and advice in archaeological site detection and behavioural modelling.
