Mulching as a multipurpose strategy in weed and insect pests control

Adolf Saria, Msc, Tanzania

Adolf graduated as a MSc from ProGrOV in 2014 and continued as a ProGrOV PhD student the same year. His MSc study was on Mulching as a multipurpose strategy in weed and insect pest control. For his PhD he decide to dig a bit deeper and study the effects of green manure on soil fertility and weed management in organic farming systems.

The objective of his PhD study is: Development of a strategy that combines soil fertility enhancement and weed control to increase productivity in high value crops like sweet pepper.

By using leguminous cover crops as green manure, the aim is to avert soil fertility and pest management problems in agro-ecological friendly agriculture. The leguminous cover crop/ green manure has a role of conserving soil chemical and physical characteristics and moisture, providing nutrients, significantly suppressing weeds and at the same time enhance the numbers of natural enemies of insect pests by providing them with suitable habitat, humidity, protection and alternative prey.
