Voices in crisis

The unrest and confusion provoked by police violence and the Covid-19 response in the US highlights the importance of effective crisis communication [4]. Shifting the focus away from the public reception of crisis-induced information and directives, in this project we initiate original lines of inquiry into how crises produce changes in the voices of authority figures, with the following research questions in mind:

  • How does voice change in figures of authority in response to threatening or frightening scenarios?
  • How does the voice of political communicators change when relating negative/positive news?
