WP2: Field phenotyping and water management for resilient vegetable production systems

Objectives:

Test by field experiments, the yield potential of tolerant varieties with and without irrigation and EFB soil amendment as well as innovative solar powered irrigation systems in combination with rainwater harvesting to provide insurance against drought.

Outputs:

Field verification and identification of eggplant and okra varieties resilient to abiotic and biotic stresses and management strategies to augment resilience. Prototypes of different sizes (250, 500, 1000 and 2000 m2) of a siphon based automated solar drip irrigation system and deployment of two of Fasterholt’s irrigation-machines to areas with plentiful water resources. 3 scientific papers, 3 MSc and 1 PhD theses and postdoc education on the impact of EFB on soil moisture conservation and nutrient uptake of best performing, selected vegetable cultivars. 2 scientific papers on (i) the development of different sizes of the automated solar drip irrigation system combined with water harvesting, and (ii) long-term effects of biochar on vegetable production.
