Sandra Simonsen obtained her Ph.D. in Media Studies and Communication from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 2022. Her areas of interest include crisis and conflict and how they manifest in language. Utilizing a combination of qualitative and digital text analytical methods, her doctoral thesis focused on the securitization of migration in national news and how that corresponds to the socioeconomic conditions of migration. In subsequent publications, she has concentrated on a series of other topics related to conflict and crisis, such as climate change, war legitimation strategies and their potential to resonate with audiences, pandemic crisis, religious propaganda, blame attribution, and the news representations of social identity.
She is currently employed as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Media Studies and Journalism at Aarhus University and is a member of the research group carrying out the project "Seasonal Journalism as Vernacular Phenology." Her specific focus within the project framework is to understand when and how phenological and weather topics became associated with climate crisis narratives in journalistic content over time.
