When the Author Becomes a Reader

For everyone, this was a new experience. For the first time, author Olha Savytska was present while her own novella, ‘Tetragrammaton’, was being read and discussed. For the participants, it was also something new: someone who had written the text joined a group that had already grown into a close reading community.

Very quickly, however, any nervousness gave way to curiosity. As mentor Iryna recalled, the shared reading session became something like a ”reading escape room,” where everyone worked together to uncover new layers of meaning. The participants shared how they imagined the characters, debated symbols and metaphors, laughed at different literal and figurative interpretations, while the author herself discovered new ways of seeing her own text.

By the end of the meeting, the conversation had gone far beyond the book itself. The group talked about war, humanity, dreams, and what it means to be truly human. After the reading, the young people asked Olha Savytska about writing. She encouraged them not to postpone new ideas but to write them down straight away, to create stories with many layers, and to read other authors carefully and widely. Reflecting on the meeting, she said words that perhaps capture the spirit of the day better than anything else: ”The youth clubs of my generation were full of intellectual discussions and analysis, but there wasn’t much room for what is deeply human. Here, you can truly feel the human side.” For our project, this is perhaps one of the most meaningful reflections on what shared reading and dialogues made possible.

Коли авторка стає читачкою

Для всіх це був новий досвід. Авторка Ольга Савицька вперше була присутня під час читання й обговорення власної новели «Тетраграматон». Для учасниць і учасників це теж був виклик: до вже сформованої групи долучилася людина, яка написала текст. 

Та дуже швидко хвилювання поступилося цікавості. Як згадує менторка Ірина, простір спільночитання перетворився на своєрідну «читацьку квест-кімнату», де всі разом шукали нові сенси. Учасники ділилися своїми уявленнями про героїв, сперечалися про символи й метафори, сміялися з несподіваних буквальних і переносних прочитань, а сама авторка відкривала у своєму тексті нові інтерпретації.

Наприкінці зустрічі розмова вийшла далеко за межі книжки. Говорили про війну, людяність, мрії й те, що робить людину Людиною. Після читання молоді люди розпитували Ольгу Савицьку про авторство. Вона радила не відкладати ідеї, а записувати їх одразу, будувати історії багатошаровими й уважно читати інших авторів. А про саму зустріч сказала слова, які, мабуть, найкраще підсумовують цей читацький день: «У клубах нашої юності було купа всього інтелектуального, аналітичного, але мало Людського. А тут відчувається саме Людське.» Для проєкту це, мабуть, один із найважливіших відгуків про те, що вдалося створити завдяки спільночитанню та діалогам.
