Taking Time to Understand

At one of our meetings, we read poetry by Kateryna Kalytko – a text that does not offer easy answers and reveals its meaning little by little. Poems like this are not always easy to explain. But perhaps that is exactly why they work so well in shared reading.

“What I really appreciated was how carefully the young people listened to one another. They were not afraid to admit that they didn’t understand everything the first time,” one of the mentors reflected. During the discussion, the participants were not looking for the “right” interpretation. Instead, they listened to different perspectives, returned to individual lines, asked questions, and discovered new meanings together.

After the meeting, the mentor shared an important thought: not every text needs to create a strong emotional response or be fully understood right away. Sometimes the most valuable part is the process of making sense of a text together – learning not to rush to conclusions, to trust one another, and to stay open to different interpretations.

Не поспішати зрозуміти

На одній із зустрічей ми читали поезію Катерини Калитко – текст, який не дає готових відповідей і відкривається поступово. Такі вірші не завжди легко пояснити. Але, можливо, саме тому вони так добре працюють у спільночитанні.

«Мені сподобалося, що молоді люди уважно слухали одне одного і не боялися визнавати, що не все зрозуміли з першого разу», – розповідає менторка. Під час розмови учасниці й учасники не шукали ”правильну” інтерпретацію. Натомість вони слухали різні думки, поверталися до окремих рядків, ставили запитання й разом відкривали нові сенси.

Після зустрічі менторка сказала дуже важливу річ: не кожен текст має одразу викликати сильні емоції або бути повністю зрозумілим. Іноді найціннішим стає сам процес спільного осмислення – коли люди вчаться не поспішати з висновками, довіряти одне одному і залишатися відкритими до різних прочитань.
