An Ultramarathon Without a Finish Line

Can we talk about the war in a way that does not overwhelm us, but instead helps us better understand ourselves and each other? At the tenth meeting of the project, we read something different for the first time. Instead of fiction, we explored contemporary Ukrainian nonfiction – Pavlo Kazarin’s essay “An Ultramarathon Without a Finish Line”. In it, the author compares our long war to an exhausting ultramarathon where the finish line is nowhere in sight. The only way to keep going is to take it one small stretch at a time – “just to the next turn.”

The participants talked about their families, about parents who are currently serving in the military, and about their own experiences of living through the war. But the conversation was not heavy. On the contrary, it was filled with warmth, mutual support, and genuine curiosity about one another’s stories.

The young people kept the conversation going themselves. They asked each other thoughtful questions, listened carefully, and shared their own reflections. Over months of shared reading, trust had grown between them, making it possible to speak openly about deeply personal experiences.

Ультрамарафон без фінішу

Чи можна говорити про війну так, щоб ця розмова не пригнічувала, а допомагала зрозуміти себе й інших? На десятій зустрічі проєкту ми вперше читали не художню літературу, а сучасну українську публіцистику – есей Павла Казаріна «Ультрамарафон без фінішу». У ньому автор порівнює довгу війну з виснажливим забігом, у якому неможливо бачити фініш. Тому єдиний спосіб рухатися вперед – долати шлях невеликими відрізками, «ось до того повороту». 

Учасниці та учасники говорили про свої сім’ї, про батьків, які зараз служать у війську, про власний досвід життя під час війни. Але ця розмова не була важкою. Навпаки – у ній було багато тепла, взаємної підтримки й щирої цікавості до історій одне одного.

Молоді люди самі підтримували розмову, ставили одне одному уточнювальні запитання, уважно слухали й ділилися власними думками. За місяці спільночитань між ними народилася довіра, яка дозволила відкрито говорити про особисте.
