Lost Cities Rediscovered (LoCi)

  • Reexamining Excavation Histories in Late Ottoman and Mandate Western Asia

About the project

Lost Cities Rediscovered (LoCi) is an international collaborative research project funded by the Gerda Henkel Stiftung based at Aarhus University, with partners in numerous other countries.

LoCi explores ancient cities in Western Asia that were largely explored by archaeologists in the 19th-20th centuries due to geopolitical developments in the region. By revisiting legacy data from such excavations, the project examines and brings to the forefront forgotten or non-published histories from and about these important sites and study the influence of archaeological practice on our understanding of these sites. At the same time, it encourages us to rethink the impact of legacy data on archaeological and historical understanding of sites, which have been known to us for centuries.
