Aalborg Sustainability Festival

Local Promotion of Sustainability through Festival for Public

Aalborg is the fourth-largest city in Denmark and is known for its commitment to sustainability and environmental initiatives. The annual sustainability festival is held since 2013 and aims to inspire citizens and businesses to make their everyday life more sustainable. The festival includes workshops and seminars on topics like renewable energy, waste reduction, recycling, and sustainable living. Exhibitions showcase sustainable technologies, products, and projects from local businesses and organizations. Live demonstrations from art and culture showcase sustainable technologies and cultural interventions to raise awareness for environmental issues. The festival is largely enabled by local citizen and community engagement.

The first festival was held in 2013 and in 2024, Aalborg will host the 10th European conference for sustainable cities and local communities (1-3 October 2024). The conference will have a specific focus on the role of local authorities taking responsibility for environmental issues and leading the way for more sustainable cities in Europe.

InfraPublics Lesson

Sustainability is becoming a political and cultural imperative for many municipalities, national masterplans, and local initiatives. The UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) are becoming a political imperative, especially since national implementation plans are set up to achieve these goals. Many actors seek to collaborate on creating sustainable infrastructures for social, ecological and economic sustainability (often referred to as “the triple bottom line” of sustainability). What are the new public alliances and communication ecosystems emerging from these initiatives?
