About the project

The “From Campus to Careers” project is a joint initiative by a consortium of five universities under Circle U. Our mission is to highlight and strengthen the value of foreign languages and intercultural competencies in higher education — and to make them visible, meaningful and relevant for the career path for all students.

This project has two interconnected resources:

  • An Employability Skills Mapping Tool (ESMT) — a framework which helps students, staff and career service professionals to identify, map and communicate the skills and capitals embedded in language education.
  • An Online Employability for Languages Module (ELM) — a digital learning module that guides students to reflect on language based and transferable skills and supports them in planning and adjusting their future careers with confidence.

The content of the Employability Skills Mapping Tool (ESMT) and the Online Employability for Languages Module (ELM) has been developed through a co-creation process involving contributions from colleagues across partner institutions Dr. Ann Carroll-BøghDr. Ana Maria Sousa Aguiar de MedeirosDr. Catherine JaegerCarla el KhouryKaren LintnerDr. Katherine OpelloMorag WallingTorunn Nyland, Ludmilla Aufurth, led and coordinated by Dr. Ana Kanareva-Dimitrovska.

The conceptual foundation of the project is inspired by the Graduate Capital Model developed by Dr Michael Tomlinson (University of Southampton, UK, 2017, Forms of graduate capital and their relationship to graduate employability. Education & Training, 59(4), 338–352). This Graduate Capital Model has been used to highlight the role and power of language learning and intercultural competences while navigating a global workforce.

Why It Matters

  • Language and intercultural skills remain undervalued in many labour markets, despite their growing importance in globalised and multicultural work environments.
  • Many students encounter difficulty in articulating the value and the potential power of their language skills effectively.
  • Educational curricula often fails to connect language learning with employment.
  • Employers increasingly seek employees who can combine disciplinary knowledge with language and intercultural competences, flexibility and a global outlook.

Our project addresses these challenges by providing an Online Employability for Languages Module and an Employability Skills Mapping Tool to support students and to encourage institutions to align curricula to meet new and emergent market demands.

Who Is This For

  • Students — especially those with core or dual language competences, who want to understand how language learning can serve as a competitive advantage in their career paths.
  • Academic Staff & Educators — who wish to integrate employability thinking into language and intercultural programmes and make learning outcomes more transparent.
  • Career Services & University Administration — interested in guidance tools for counselling, skill recognition and curriculum development.
  • Employers & External Partners — who wish to recognise and recruit graduates with language, intercultural and transferable competences and contribute to shaping curricula to meet labour market needs.

Our Approach and Values

  • We adopt a holistic view of employability — seeing language learning not merely as language acquisition, but as a source of human, social, cultural, identity and psychological capital.
  • We believe in co-creation and collaboration — engaging with students, educators, career consultants and employers to ensure relevance and impact.
  • We aim for practical application — aligning academic experience with tangible skills, competences and career opportunities.
  • We promote plurilingualism, mobility, diversity, inclusion and global engagement — helping graduates to thrive in international and multicultural environments.
