To identify the needs for minor uses within Europe, the ERANET C-IPM partners and the National Minor Use coordinators within the EU and associated countries were asked to identify priority minor use problems for which IPM solutions are needed. Cooperation was sought with the EUMUDA.
By the end of 2014, responses were received from 24 countries of which 20 were ERA-NET member countries and 4 were outside the ERA-NET C-IPM.
Data was collected, processed and entered in a database, the Table of Needs. An excel query of this database can be consulted here. The processed data was analysed. This resulted in a ranking of mutual crop/target (=pest) combination between countries for which IPM solutions are needed. This can be seen in the Analysis Table of Needs here.
At the EU level Expert Groups on minor use are grouped according to commodities (http://www.minoruses.eu/expertgroups/#ceg). Therefore, the needs were also analysed according to commodities such as vegetables, fruits etc.
During the annual meeting in Lisbon on November 26-28, 2014, the highest ranking crop target combinations were presented. The participants selected 10 priorities. These 10 priorities were input for the longlist of topics for the first call of the ERANET C-IPM.
The following explains the titles and abbreviations used in the tables:
Explanation Table of Needs
Title of column | Explanation |
Number of countries: | Number of countries which have the same minor use problem in a crop. |
Aggregation of Crops | Crop (group) |
Aggregation of Targets | Pest (group) |
Country | Country which needs an IPM solution. |
Crop Scientific name | If relevant, scientific name of the crops in a need for IPM occurs. |
Crop EPPO code | If available, EPPO code of crops in which a need for IPM occurs. |
Crop English name | Common name of the crop. |
Target Scientific name | Pest which causes the minor use problem |
Target EPPO code | EPPO code of pest (group) |
Target English name | Common name of pest. |
Situation | Way of production I=grown indoor; O= grown outdoor; OI: both indoor and outdoor grown |
Acreages | Estimated hectares in a country. |
Evaluation | Reason why a minor use problem occurs. |
Comments | Any comment to clarify the evaluation. |

Explanation Analysis Table of Needs
In the first seven sheets of the Excel file, the ranking (from the highest number of countries to the lowest) of mutual IPM needs is presented. For example the sheet ’11 countries’ contains the information of mutual IPM needs for a certain crop/target (=pest) combination which is mentioned by 11 countries. And so on.
In the following sheets these mutual needs are analysed according to commodities, coinciding with the European Minor Commodity Expert Groups. Within these sheets, ranking is also from highest to the lowest number of countries which have a mutual IPM need.
Title of column | Explanation |
Aggregation of Crops | Crop (group) |
Aggregation of Targets | Pest (group) |
Country | Country which needs an IPM solution. |
Crop Scientific name | If relevant, scientific name of the crops in a need for IPM occurs. |
Target Scientific name | Pest which causes the minor use problem |
Situation | Way of production I=grown indoor; O= grown outdoor; OI: both indoor and outdoor grown |
