Synergies between GIS and posthumanism in archaeological practice

Article by Mark Haughton in Journal of Archaeological Method and Theory

Mark has just published a paper in the Journal of Archaeological Method and Theory which explores the potential of posthumanist theory to expand approaches to landscape studies in GIS, particularly using the approach to explore a heathland example. In the paper, he argues that assemblage thinking can help us to better recognise the non-human elements of the world which give landscapes their unique characters and affect how they were (and are) experienced by human communities. In the heathland example, Mark investigates how the movement of sheep may have influenced the ways in which Bronze Age communities moved through the landscape, and explores how different ties between people might have been formed by heathland fires at various scales.
