Sheep, heathlands and learning
Update from Ellen Martine Heuser in Lemvig
A recent profile in Magasinet Vestkysten highlights Ellen Martine Heuser’s relocation to Northwest Jutland and her current work in the heathland landscapes around Lemvig. Over the past two years, she has gradually shifted her daily life and practice from large European cities to the open terrain of the West Coast, where grazing, land management and cultural history intersect.
Ellen Martine is involved in establishing a new nature- and knowledge centre at Gjellerodde, a heathland and Natura 2000 area. Her work includes developing school-oriented activities that introduce children to heathland ecology, grazing practices and landscape heritage, as well as plans for a mobile “heath office” to support outreach across several sites in the region.
Her move began in 2023 through an unexpected collaboration with a local shepherd, which introduced her to the practical and cultural dimensions of sheep grazing. Now based in Lemvig, Ellen Martine continues to explore the connections between everyday practices, community engagement and the long-term care of heathland environments.
