Pages in Exile: Russian Picturebooks on the Move
From 17–19 September 2025 Ekaterina Shatalova participated in the 10th European Network of Picturebook Research Conference and a related Doctoral Workshop “Understanding the World: Multiculturality, Interculturality and Global Citizenship in Picturebooks” held in Lisbon, Portugal.
Her paper titled “I Will Take My Home Everywhere with Me”: Migration Narratives in Contemporary Russian Picturebooks” examined contemporary Russian picturebooks on (e)migration as part of a growing corpus of anti-war children’s literature – a form of cultural resistance in a context where even referring to the conflict as a “war” has been criminalised under intensified censorship.
