PF4Protein - Precision Farming for Protein

"The purpose of the project idea is to develop precision farming guidelines as well as a data-based decision support system to optimize the value chain of Danish-produced legume protein powder for human consumption. The project focuses on variety selection, precision application of liquid fertilizer and biostimulants in the field. Sensor-intensive on-farm field trials are used to investigate and validate. The project's output is a decision-support tool for variety selection and the preparation of prescription maps for area-specific optimized fertilization with macro- and micronutrients as well as biostimulants for Rhizobia nodule stimulation.

The project's results are expected to increase both the green and economic sustainability of Danish high-value protein produced for human consumption. Background: Legume protein powder for human consumption requires a high protein content in the harvested crop for effective industrial processing, which is why the focus in Danish contract cultivation of legumes has shifted towards payment for protein content rather than protein yield. There is a need for farming tools that increase the protein content in Danish-produced peas and beans. Results: a data-based decision-support tool for an optimized area-specific production of pea and bean protein with improved profitability in Danish-produced vegetable protein as a result. Main beneficiaries: farmers (contract growers) and the agro-industry (fertilizer and biostimulant producers, grain traders)."
