“The Road to Palmyra” at the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek
Yesterday evening, 19 September 2019, the new special exhibition “The Road to Palmyra” opened at the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen.

Situated in the gallery around the winter garden of the museum, the extensive collection of Palmyrene objects kept at the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek were revealed to the public almost in its entirety for the first time ever. Funerary portraits, religious banqueting tickets, altars, inscriptions and other ancient objects together with letters and excavation diaries giving insight into the objects’ way to the collection are shedding light on the history of Palmyra and its inhabitants until 1 March 2020. Also smells and sounds of ancient Palmyra and the colours of the Palmyrene limestone portraits are brought to life in the exhibition.
“The Road to Palmyra” is the outcome of a collaboration between one of the most important museums in Europe and the Palmyra Portrait Project headed by Professor and Center Director Rubina Raja and funded by the Carlsberg Foundation. Thus, the exhibition is curated by Anne Marie Nielsen, curator at Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, and Rubina Raja.
Many UrbNet employees and affiliates attended the opening, while those involved in the exhibition and in the two catalogues published in connection with the exhibition also celebrated the opening at a banquet in the museum the evening before.
