Deliverable (D5.1)

Work Package 5 completed its first deliverable, the final portfolio of Nature Based Solutions and Mitigation Measures that will be evaluated in NORDBALT-ECOSAFE. The portfolio includes 33 different measures and indicates in which of the six countries involved in the project they are commonly used. The portfolio provides the basis for the next deliverable in WP5, the NBS and MM classification framework, and the SWAT+ modelling of NBS and MM in WP4.  

Deliverable (D5.2)

D5.2 presents the initial version of a classification framework considering various factors that are essential for selecting, designing, and evaluating a particular measure, which was developed based on the NBS and MM portfolio (D5.1). A detailed analysis of the classification framework during the NORDBALT-ECOSAFE mid-term meeting revealed large differences between the countries in how measures are designed and implemented. Therefore, example “info sheets” were developed for selected measures, which are focused on a comparison of reduction efficiencies, design and implementation, and implementation barriers between the six NORDBALT-ECOSAFE countries. The NORDBALT-ECOSAFE classification framework is intended to be a dynamic document and it will be updated continuously over the second half of the project to reflect new findings from the project (i.e., reduction efficiencies from SWAT+, stakeholder preferences identified in the 2nd round of regional workshops to be held in autumn 2024), the scientific literature, and other reports. Also, additional info sheets will be developed.

Nature Based Solutions and Mitigation Measures

Objectives

The main objective of WP5 is to foster the implementation of innovative Nature Based Solutions (NBSs) and mitigation measures (MMs) in the Nordic-Baltic region of Europe to reduce diffuse nutrient losses from agriculture and forestry under current and future climate conditions and stay within safe ecological boundaries in different water bodies (rivers, lakes, marine waters) under special consideration of stakeholder preference.

Tasks

  • 5.1: Compile a portfolio of NBSs and MMs suitable for the Nordic-Baltic region.
  • 5.2: Develop a classification framework for the selected NBSs and MMs
  • 5.3: Develop a novel methodology to identify site-specific opportunities for implementation of NBSs and MMs
  • 5.4: Establish an online River Basin Management Support System for each of the six demonstration river basins
