Deliverable (D5.1)

Work Package 5 completed its first deliverable, the final portfolio of Nature Based Solutions and Mitigation Measures that will be evaluated in NORDBALT-ECOSAFE. The portfolio includes 33 different measures and indicates in which of the six countries involved in the project they are commonly used. The portfolio provides the basis for the next deliverable in WP5, the NBS and MM classification framework, and the SWAT+ modelling of NBS and MM in WP4.  

Deliverable (D5.2)

D5.2 presents the initial version of a classification framework considering various factors that are essential for selecting, designing, and evaluating a particular measure, which was developed based on the NBS and MM portfolio (D5.1). A detailed analysis of the classification framework during the NORDBALT-ECOSAFE mid-term meeting revealed large differences between the countries in how measures are designed and implemented. Therefore, example “info sheets” were developed for selected measures, which are focused on a comparison of reduction efficiencies, design and implementation, and implementation barriers between the six NORDBALT-ECOSAFE countries. The NORDBALT-ECOSAFE classification framework is intended to be a dynamic document and it will be updated continuously over the second half of the project to reflect new findings from the project (i.e., reduction efficiencies from SWAT+, stakeholder preferences identified in the 2^nd round of regional workshops to be held in autumn 2024), the scientific literature, and other reports. Also, additional info sheets will be developed.

Deliverable (D5.4)

This is the fourth Policy Brief produced by the NORDBALT-ECOSAFE project, titled "Identifying

site-specific opportunities for implementing Nature Nature-Based Solutions and other nutrient mitigation measures in catchments". EU member states are struggling to reach the targets of the EU Water Framework Directive, which demands most surface waters to be in good ecological status by 2027. One of the main pressures on European streams, rivers, lakes and coastal waters comes from excess inputs of nutrients (nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P)) from point and diffuse sources. Closing the gap between current nutrient loadings and concentrations in surface waters and the targets set for different water body types is a major challenge. It requires the use of tools for quantifying the contributions from different sources and for identifying suitable sites for implementation of nutrient reduction measures. This Policy Brief discusses different approaches to placing nutrient reduction measures in catchments and introduces the workflow of a new methodology for identifying site-specific opportunities for implementing nutrient reduction measures in catchments.
