The third volume of the final publications from the Danish-German Jerash Northwest Quarter Project’s excavations has been published. The new edited volume provides a comprehensive analysis of the glass finds, the lamps, and the Jerash Bowls discovered in the Northwest Quarter of Gerasa (modern Jerash in northern Jordan) during the excavations. All three find groups cover diverse aspects of the urban life of the city across centuries.

The Danish-German team, led by Professor Achim Lichtenberger and Professor and Centre Director Rubina Raja, conducted excavations in the Northwest Quarter of Gerasa from 2011–2016. Covering about 4 hectares, the Northwest Quarter is the highest point within the walled ancient city. Throughout the excavations, a full-quantification strategy, documenting all finds, was implemented. This strategy was pursued in order to make workflows and documentation as holistic and transparent as possible. Furthermore, full-quantification ensures that the final publications from the project are as comprehensive as possible in terms of statistics and diagnostic finds.

The contributions in the new volume are written by specialists on the specific object groups, the site and the region. Together, they provide the most detailed insight into the glass finds, the lamps and the Jerash Bowls ever given of excavated finds from Gerasa. Furthermore, some of the chapters also deal with the stratigraphic contexts and all concern themselves with the chronological spread of the three material groups. The third volume of the Danish-German Jerash Northwest Quarter Project yet again underlines the ground-breaking outcomes of high-definition and full-quantification approaches, which were pursued throughout the excavation project’s lifetime.

All eight volumes of the final publications from the Danish-German Jerash Northwest Quarter Project will be published in the series Jerash Papers (Brepols Publishers). The next volume will be on the architectural finds, the mosaics and the wall-paintings.
