Abstract
Danish archaeologist Harald Ingholt (1896–1985), founder of Berytus in 1934, had a distinguished career that has repercussions for the field of Levantine archaeology to this day. In particular, his work on Palmyra in the 1920s and 30s produced detailed excavation diaries and an archive that was foundational for his career, not least of all the seminal 1928 monograph Studier over Palmyrensk Skulptur. Ingholt’s research career and work on the art, archaeology, and epigraphy of Palmyra has, since 2012, been the focus of new research that explores Palmyra’s culture and history, both the ancient and more recent past. This research has brought to the forefront entirely new knowledge about the site and its material culture through the unpublished material collected by Ingholt.
