  • Baltic Sea multilevel health impacts on key species of anthropogenic hazardous substances

What is BALTHEALTH?

BALTHEALTH (Baltic Sea multilevel health impacts on key species of anthropogenic hazardous substances) is a BONUS funded project to asses the impact of multiple stressors on the ecological functioning and overall health of the Baltic ecosystem. The project has a strong focus on the impact of anthropogenic hazardous substances (AHSs) on all levels of the Baltic ecosystem, and therefore requires a holistic approach to assess environmental health.

The overall objective of the project is to investigate how multiple natural and anthropogenic stressors have been impacting key ecological and commercial species within the Baltic food web, from the individual to the population and ecosystem level. In order to assess cumulative ecosystem wide effects of stressors on Baltic wildlife, BALTHEALTH will focus on key strategic elements:

  • Food web structure and dynamics
  • Legacy and emerging AHSs
  • Biomarkers of adverse health
  • Infectious diseases
  • Ecological modeling of multiple stressors
