The final workshop of the BERTHA – Danish Big Data Centre for Environment and Health was held on 7–8 May 2025 at the Carlsberg Foundation in Copenhagen, marking the formal conclusion of the project.
Funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation Challenge Programme, BERTHA brought together researchers from multiple disciplines to explore how environmental and social factors influence health outcomes over the life course. Through the integration of large-scale data sources including national health registers, biomarker data, environmental exposure models, and sensor technologies the project aimed to strengthen the foundation for environmental health research in Denmark and beyond.
At the final event, participants shared findings, reflected on collaborative experiences, and discussed ideas for future work. The meeting also highlighted some of BERTHA’s key outcomes:
-
Training and support for 28 PhD students and postdocs
-
Publication of over 180 peer-reviewed scientific papers
-
Development of tools for environmental exposure assessment and health data integration
-
Formation of new networks and international research partnerships
“BERTHA has provided a platform for interdisciplinary collaboration and capacity building,” said Professor Torben Sigsgaard, project lead. “We are thankful for the engagement of so many researchers and institutions over the years.”
Although the formal project period has ended, many of BERTHA’s activities will continue in new forms through related studies, follow-up initiatives, and the ongoing work of early-career researchers trained during the project.
