Historical perspectives on engineering life in science, literature and art


  • Date: June 10, 2025
  • Venue: AIAS workshop room (1630.301) & AIAS hall
  • Concept: The workshop will explore the definition of life. Participants will be sorted into interdisciplinary groups, who will work on defining life based on presentations and examples of historical scientific work, artworks, and literature that have addressed the topic. Based on their definition, the groups will construct their own "organism" and present and describe their creation at the end of the workshop.

  • 9.30-10.00 Arrival at AIAS and coffee 
  • Session 1: History of Science
  • Session 2: Art and literature
    • 11.00-11.15 Lecture by Pernille Leth-Espensen on "Engineering of life in art"
    • 11.15-11.30 Lecture by Mads Rosendahl Thomsen on "Engineering of life in literature"
    • 11.30-12.00 Interdisciplinary group work + coffee
  • 12.00-12.30 Presentation by groups and discussion
  • 12.30-13.30 Lunch
