Abstract
Roman provincial studies have almost always been permeated by the ideology and ethics of colonialism and post-colonialism, even when they are merely descriptive or claim to be something else. In other words, everything that goes on in the provinces is a result of some form of negotiation between the central imperial power and the people in the provinces. In an attempt to escape this perspective and place the people in a more local context we will on December the 6th look at personal relationships, at they appear in inscriptions and through imagery on roman gravestones in the northern provinces.
