Renal disease affects an estimated 15% of the adult population. Long-standing, progressive deterioration of renal function, or chronic kidney disease (CKD), affects 10% of the adult population and the incidence and prevalence of CKD is on the rise, concurrent with the increase in lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and obesity. To date, only very few therapeutics for the treatment of CKD are available, and the clinical efficacy of these are limited. There is an urgent need for well characterized, suitable translational human disease models that can be used as screening tools with high predictive value for drug discovery.
