The lipid bilayer defines and encapsulates a cell from its surroundings, but the cell depends heavily on having transport of ions, nutrients, and proteins across the membrane. I will give a brief introduction to why and how we use electrophysiology to measure the transport of ions and charged molecules across the membrane using Xenopus oocytes as model cells, and I will give examples of how the method can be used to study the molecular bases of disease and treatment.
