Abstract

Iron finds from the Northern Emporium project have been studied and analysed to give information about provenance and production. In this presentation the preliminary results of the archaeometallurgical analyses will be presented.

In studying iron we seek the answers to two main questions; where did the iron come from? And how was it made? In studying the chemical composition of slags embedded in the iron objects, we may gain knowledge about the geographical fingerprint from where the iron was extracted. Through the results of these chemical analyses, we may start to infer about past societies and their trade networks. By studying the structure of the iron, through metallurgical analyses, we receive knowledge about the craftsmanship behind each iron object.

All are welcome.
