Introduction of Julia Steding

Meet our new Postdoc Julia Steding

I am a classical archaeologist with a strong research interest in portraiture studies. During my PhD at Aarhus University, I examined the production economy of Palmyrene loculus reliefs and during my first postdoc, I focused on the reuse of inscribed stone objects in building projects in Roman and Late Antique Palmyra. Throughout both my PhD and postdoc, I developed an increasing interest in questions of materiality and portraiture, particularly in how these two aspects interact.

Within the Locally Crafted Empires (LoCiS) project, led by Rubina Raja and funded by the Carlsberg Foundation, my primary regional focus is Roman-period Egypt. Together with the other project members, I contribute to compiling a dataset of portraiture from Western Asia and Egypt, while concentrating specifically on material from Egypt. This includes mummy portraits, plaster masks, stone sculpture and reliefs, as well as wall paintings and shrouds.

My research examines these portraits within their regional contexts, exploring how pre-existing portrait traditions were transformed or adapted under Roman rule. I am particularly interested in how materiality, resource availability, and craftsmanship shaped the final artistic outcomes.
