Meet our new Postdoc Giulia Vannucci
Giulia Vannucci is a classical archaeologist whose research focuses on ancient material culture, with particular emphasis on terracotta sculpture and coroplastic production in the Mediterranean world. She received her academic training at the University of Pisa and Sapienza University of Rome, and obtained her PhD from the Scuola Normale Superiore with a dissertation on terracotta votive statues from Latium Vetus in the Republican period. She has held a postdoctoral position as Research Fellow in Classical Archaeology at Unitelma Sapienza University of Rome.
Her research interests include ancient urban contexts, with a focus on Gortys (Crete), Sparta (Peloponnese), and Agrigento (Sicily). She was a long-standing member of the archaeological missions in Agrigento (Scuola Normale Superiore) and in Gortys (Sapienza University of Rome - Italian Archaeological School at Athens).
Since 1 February 2026 she is engaged in postdoctoral research within the project Locally Crafted Empires, directed by Rubina Raja and funded by the Carlsberg Foundation. Within the scope of the project, she undertakes the cataloguing of portraits of private individuals in various media from selected areas of Syria spanning from 100 BCE to 500 CE. The objective of this study is to examine the manner in which communities articulated identity within a shifting imperial context spanning the Hellenistic, Roman, and Late Antique periods.
