Inventing New Strategies for Art Institutions

The project sets out to provide new approaches to institutional action by analyzing independent art initiatives on a global scale. Rather than approaching an institution as a formalized set of procedures that precedes and conditions the production of projects and exhibitions, these organizations enact instituting as a dynamic process of connecting to the world. Thereby they turn upside down the modern legacy of art institutions as stable structures and evolve creative ways of engaging with a contemporary culture concerned with event making.

By investigating how these initiatives in different ways, and conditioned by local urgencies, co-ordinate artistic, social and political action into public events, the project aims to contribute to a rethinking of the dynamics of instituting in the 21st Century.
