These draft scenarios have been developed with a group of actors from the European Commission, NGOs, farmers and farm organisations, extension services, industry and research and we would like to give the opportunity for those not able to attend the workshop on this topic to provide input to them.

By taking part, you will be helping to develop knowledge in a critically important policy field. The information provided will feed into policy recommendations, which aim at improving the policy framework to better integrate soil quality concerns, with the ultimate aim of reversing the decline of soil quality in Europe.

The SOILCARE Project is a Horizon2020 project on sustainable and profitable agriculture in Europe. SoilCare is a 5-year project that brings together 28 partners from 18 EU countries, spanning universities, research institutes and SMEs.

Background

In June 2019, with the contributions of the participants to the workshop, we have identified the factors that would potentially influence the adoption of sustainable farming practices. We then talked about drivers that would challenge or enable voluntary and mandatory policy instruments. Building on those, we have created scenarios which explore different future pathways for sustainable agriculture in Europe from now till 2050.

Aims of the webinar

·        Presentation of the scenarios developed: Short clips will illustrate what agriculture and life in general might look like in 2050.

·        Receive feedback on the scenarios: Tell us how plausible the future pathways for sustainable agriculture that we sketched out are!

The developed narrative scenarios will provide input to the modelling and a second workshop, which will focus on assessing the impact of the scenarios on policy-relevant criteria, the barriers and enablers to take up sustainable agricultural practices and policy support.

Ultimately, the combined results of the modelling and the narratives will provide input in the identification of best policy approaches tailored to different situations. We will disseminate these policy recommendations to the European Commission and to a wider audience through a report, conferences and policy briefs.

You are invited to share your expertise and opinions.

The webinar is scheduled for Thursday April 23rd, 2020, 11:00 – 12:00 (CET).
