Tracking of the animals

As part of the project a number of red deer hinds are equipped with GPS collars throughout the project period. Here, you can be updated on the animals’ movements during the year.

If you are in the area, you will probably from time to time be able to observe a collared animal, and you actually have the possibility of distinguishing the individual animals from each other. Each hind has a unique colour code on the collar, which makes it possible to identify the individual. The colour codes consist of three horizontal lines on the sides of the collar and are read from top to bottom.

To make the collared hinds easier to spot – and hopefully ensure that they are not killed by hunting in the period that they wear the collar (2 years) – each individual is also provided with a yellow ear tag with the text "Kalø" and a serial number.

In March 2019, the first five hinds were caught using drop-nets and equipped with GPS collars. There were one hearst (1.5 years) as well as four adult hinds (within the age interval 3 to 9 years).

Four out of five collars transmit as planned, but the fifth collar (hind 20551 “red/red/red”) does no longer - after a trouble-free start - transmit data, although it apparently logs positions. The hind has been seen alive and well. We are working to correct the error and when we, hopefully, succeed, the data will be available here.
