New postdoc at the Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute (VPCI)

Jenny Jami has joined the team as postdoctoral researcher

Jenny Jami is working as a Research Associate in the project “Antimicrobial Resistance and Labour Migration across Healthcare Boundaries in Northern South Asia” since 8th August 2023. In the project, she is engaged in ethnographic study exploring the experiences of patients suffering from tuberculosis (TB) at a hospital-based field-site in Delhi, India. Her current research on TB patients is guided by an interest to understand their migration trajectories across administrative health boundaries, their treatment trajectories prior to the TB clinic, and to explore the vulnerabilities and forms of resilience that impact the risk of development and spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) among TB patients, as well as to examine the impact of COVID-19 pandemic in their health-seeking behaviour. Through this project, she attempts to explore and investigate possible syndemic factors in relation to TB-related outcomes with a focus on drug-resistant TB patients (DRTB).

Jenny Jami has a PhD in Anthropology from the North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong, India. For her PhD, she conducted ethnographic fieldwork among the Lotha Nagas, a tribal population in north-east India, with an objective to assess their nutritional status and morbidity and to understand the factors influencing their morbidity patterns. Her core research interest centers around studies on health and disease, particularly in context of vulnerable and marginalized groups. Besides medical anthropology, her other research areas include nutritional anthropology, educational anthropology, urban anthropology, and tribal studies.
