Under urolighederne i Syrien har oldtidsbyen Palmyra været besat af tropperne fra Islamisk Stat. Uvurderlige bygningsværker og uerstatelig kulturhistorie er blevet ødelagt og gået tabt. Ved at kende vores forhistorie kan vi bedre forstå nutiden og forhåbentlig forbedre verden til fremtiden. Og her er arkæologien det tætteste vi kommer på en tidsmaskine.
