Importance

Earth’s environment is ongoing massive changes in response to climate change, land-use change, pollution, and biological invasions, with strong impacts on ecosystem functioning (structure and dynamics) and therefore on the ecosystem services on which human societies depend. It is therefore a key priority for science to improve understanding of ecosystem functioning as well as the capacity for accurately predicting its dynamics under ongoing and future changes in environment, notably climate change.
